Mineral Oil & Your Hair

How often do you check your product ingredients? How many of those have mineral oil listed in the first five ingredients? 80% of hair care products marketed toward ethnic races have mineral oil in its composition. So whats the big deal you ask? Let’s take a closer look.

What is Mineral Oil?
Mineral oil is one of a number of inexpensive byproducts that are made from petroleum. Sometimes referred to as paraffin oil or Nujol, white mineral oil is composed of a blend of hydrocarbons that is not unlike that of petroleum jelly. The difference is that mineral oil is a liquid petrolatum, making it an ideal choice for a number of applications.

Should I Use it?
The choice to use mineral oil in your hair is a personal preference. For some it works wonders. And for others like myself: my hair laughs at it (literally). Here is a list of the pros and cons of it’s use:

Pros:
– Reduces Frizz
– Prevents moisture from escaping
– Reduces damages caused by chemical treatments

Cons:
– Though it prevents moisture from escaping, it also prevents it from entering
– Clogs pores
– Attracts dirt

Conclusion
The choice is clearly yours. Do whatever works for you. Me personally, I’m sticking with my coconut oil β™₯. Relaxed or natural, mineral oil or no mineral oil. Healthy hair is just that. Don’t feed into the hype because at the end of the day it is still YOUR hair!
